Large DIA Turning

CNC Milling

What Is Turning in Machining?

Turning refers to a machining process that uses a lathe to rotate metal as a cutting tool makes cuts to remove any metal along the diameter. As a result, a cylinder shape is produced. The cutting tool is capable of cutting at different angles, allowing different shapes to be made. This is done either by hand or by a Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machine.

A CNC machine is necessary when the measurements for parts must be extremely precise. A lathe can be used to carry out the turning process, either manually or by automation. In most cases today, this process is done with CNC machines.

How the Turning Process Works

The turning process is done with a lathe machine that moves the cutting tool in a continual straight line following the surface of the workpiece in rotation. As a result, material is taken away from the circumference until the correct size of diameter is reached.

Turning utilizes single-point cutting tools that extract the material away from the rotating workpiece. Different tools are available for roughing, forming, undercutting, threading, facing, and grooving.

Large Diameter Turning

Large diameter turning is designed to produce parts that are heavy, longer, and larger. These machines can remove large amounts of material rapidly and precisely. Along with CNC capabilities, all projects are ensured to be finished accurately from start to finish. Additionally, large diameter turning machines can not only take on several parts at once, but may also bore and turn at the same time.

Elite Turning & Machining offers a large diameter turning from up to 98 inches in diameter by 7 feet.

What Can Be Made with a Large Diameter Lathe?

The lathe is an incredible tool with many capabilities; combining a cutting tool with the way in which the axis moves creates a variety of different products. The adaptability allows for the production of many highly efficient and high-quality parts.

Different kinds of lathe operations can include drilling, facing, thread cutting, gear cutting, grinding, grooving, polishing, and milling.

Because of the versatility of this tool, there are so many things that can be created with it. Some of the products that can be produced include fittings, ball joints, automotive parts, motorcycle parts, cylinders, brackets, rollers, spacers, suspension arms, threaded parts such as nuts and bolts, and pulleys.
